Press release: Laboratory animal trader from Tilburg accused of ill treatment of animals
11-05- 05 RC Hartelust BV, trader in laboratory animals and seated in Tilburg (the Netherlands) will be prosecuted in Sweden. The Swedish Animal Welfare Agency accuses RC Hartelust BV of ill treatment of animals, ignoring the animal welfare law of Sweden and lacking the performance of the EU-laws. The Dutch authorities have received a letter of comment.
One of the big fears of campaigners against Hartelust BV came true. On the 26 th of January 2005 4 monkeys died during transport to the Swedish Smittskyddsinstitutet (Swedish institute for Infectious Disease Control). RC Hartelust BV was responsible for the transport of the monkeys.
50 Macaques who were bred In China and had been in quarantine in Tilburg for several months were transported to Sweden. At the arrival 4 monkeys were dead. According to Swedish reports the cause of death was dehydration. The monkeys were placed too close to the heater in the mini van. During the 17-hour transport the monkeys were given only 1 apple and no water. In an official reaction to the Swedish institute RC Hartelust BV said to take complete responsibility for the death of the 4 monkeys. On the 28 th of January 2005 RC Hartelust BV delivered 4 new monkeys to the Swedish institute. RC Hartelust uses the following mini vans; Mercedes, Ford and Hyundai.
The monkeys were transported to Sweden for HIV tests. Some time ago Chimpanzees were used in HIV tests in the Netherlands. The only conclusion that could be drawn was that these tests had been a complete waste of energy and time. Chimpanzees do not develop AIDS. Dr. M Feinberg (AIDS researcher): “If you develop a drug within 5 to 6 years that works fine for monkeys and test it further on humans, you find out humans react totally different to the drug. You have to conclude you have wasted 5 to 6 years of research.”
On the 9 th of April 2005 an international demonstration of animal rights activists against RC Hartelust BV took place in Tilburg. The demonstration of more than 300 people ended noisily at the gates of the company at the Kapelmeesterlaan 112B in Tilburg.
Activists and campaigners of “Stop the vivisection industry” will go on with the fight against RC Hartelust BV.The fight against traders in laboratory animals like RC Hartelust BV and the fight against the vivisection industry is a fight for animal liberation. This is part of the big fight for a world where everybody can be free.

Press release: Primates killed during transport
26-04-05 A coalition of animal rights activists who started a campaign against RC Hartelust BV, one of the biggest traders in laboratory animals for the vivisection industry, recieved some horrible news. During a transport of primates (Macaques fascicularis) on the 26 of January 2005 to the Smittskyddsinstitutet in Sweden (Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control) four Macaques died.
After a period of quarantine at RC Hartelust BV in Tilburg (NL) fifty China-bred Macaques were transported by lorry from the Netherlands to Sweden by this Dutch supplier. During the transport four of these Macaques died. The reason for the monkeys' deaths is said to have been that the cages were placed too close to a heating apparatus inside the lorry. The transport lasted for 17 hours and their cages were too close to the heater in the bus. The monkeys were given 1 apple each during the transport, and no water. There is no information that the conditions of the monkeys were checked at any time during transport. RC Hartelust BV has informed that they assume all responsibility for what has happened. On the 28 th of January 2005 RC Hartelust BV delivered four new monkeys. RC Hartelust BV uses Hyundai, Mercedes and Ford mini vans.
The primates were placed in the on-going HIV-research at the Smittskyddsinstitutet . In the Netherlands there's no longer HIV research on Chimpanzees. The research had been a total waste of time and energy. Primates and Chimpanzees (and other monkeys) do not develop AIDS.
Dr. M. Feinberg (AIDS researcher) quote:” If you develop a medicine which works in monkeys and test it on humans you'll realize that humans react completely different to the medicine than the monkeys did. You'll realize you wasted 5 to 6 years.
RC Hartelust BV has been in the news on the 9 th of April this year, because a coalition of animal rights activists organized a demonstration against this trader. It was a peaceful demonstration of 300 people, which came to a noisy end at the gates of the company at the Kapelmeesterlaan 112b in Tilburg.
The fight against animal traders like RC Hartelust BV will continue. It's a fight against the vivisection industry and therefore a fight for animal liberation. This is pat of a big fight for a world where everybody can be free.
End of the press release.
Report and pictures:
Hartelust Heartless Tilburg 9th of April, 13.00 hours. 250-300 people from the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Itlay and the U.K. gathered at the Central Station to join an animal rights demonstration through the streets of Tilburg. The demontration was against RC Hartelust BV, one of the biggest trader in laboratory animals within the international vivisection industry.
A small group of Neo-Nazis from the National Alliance turned up to join the demonstration, but they had to leave the demonstration immediately. They even phoned the organization and asked if they please could join the demo, ofcourse they couldn't and they were laughed at. The fight for animal liberation is a fight for human liberation. This
is part of the big fight for a world where everybody can be free. It was clear that any form of intolerance, like homophobia, fascism and specisism wasn't tolerated in the demonstration. Therefore the Nazis were banned from the demonstration.
The demonstration was supported by drumband Heisa which drummed motivating rhythms and a recording and playback equipment on a barrow. People were shouting powerful slogans and the 10.000 leaflets were easily spread. A lot people came out of their houses with their thumbs up and some of them even joined the demonstration. During the demonstration animal exploiting/abusive shops were treated with some spontaneous reactions from out of the demo. The exploiters and abusers chose tofu for their money and closed their shops for the time being. After a long walk the demonstration arrived at the Kapelmeesterlaan in the North of Tilburg. RC Hartelust BV is officially seated on number 112b. The few police officers at the scene were obviously not able to handle the 300 angry protestors. Fences were broken and thrown away. A little bit of pushing and pulling between the local coppers, the security and the protestors was inevitable. The organization let the protestors know that it was not quite the intention of the demonstration to start a scuffle.... The police used police horses to get the protestors a bit out of the way. After a quarter of an hour the protestors decided to go back to the centre of Tilburg. The people who live in Tilburg Noord know now what kind of animal abusing company is seated in their district. About 10 people who tried to support Hartelust got a lot to think about. Anyone who wants to support RC Hartelust BV in the future, should think again. The demonstration came to a controlled and combative end.
In the centre of Tilburg people had organized an animal rights benefit gig, with a nice organic vegan hot meal, information stalls, vegan snacks, drinks and not to forget the bands and DJ. There was room for discussion and international contacts were fetched. It is clear that the animal rights movement in the Netherlands will not be intimidated, not by the government and not by the court of justice. The fight for animal liberation will continue. A lot of people are prepared to go out on the streets and give their opinion loud and clear. See you all next time.
